Recently, a 600+ acre limestone quarrying and mining operation application was filed before the Department of Oil, Gas, and Mining (DOGM). This project threatens so much of what our region holds dear: land, water, wildlife, air quality, and persevering the majesty of the Wasatch, to name a few. At a proposed size of 600+ acres, after being dug, blasted, and hauled away, the areas north of Grandeur Peak and Mt Aire would be permanently scarred. Leaving our communities including non-human populations to live with the degraded habitat, water, and air.
In April of 2022, Salt Lake County leaders took a first step toward protecting the Wasatch Mountains by prohibiting mining and gravel pits. Individuals played a critical role, with nearly all county representatives citing they received hundreds of letters asking them to prohibit this destructive use from further tearing apart our Wasatch Canyons.
On August 22, DOGM approved the Small Mining Application that was filed by Tree Farm LLC. This announcement is consistent with our belief for how abysmal Utah’s laws and regulations are for protecting land, air, water, people and communities.Having another dusty mine, compounded by a dusty lake bed, next to the most populated region, the commercial center of Utah, is inappropriate, dangerous, but the epitome of the Utah way - a lack of care for the people and places that make (made) Utah great.

Granite Construction Petition
Dear Tree Farm LLC, Jesse Lassley, and Granite Construction (GVA),
We, as a community, value wild mountains, clean air, healthy rivers and streams, in many regards we strive to leave them in better condition than when we found them. This is documented in numerous local policies, publicly adopted plans and in reports commissioned to help guide activities in the Wasatch Mountains.
Please withdraw your applications, abandon all efforts to turn Parley’s Canyon into a small or large mining operation, and work with our community to see this land protected, and restored and its outstanding wilderness characteristics preserved for generations to come.
